Fruitful Yield's Nutritionist Offers Natural Sun Protection Hints

BLOOMINGDALE, Ill., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- According to Jim Golick, a
certified nutritionist for Fruitful Yield, a chain of health food and vitamin

"Avoid excessive sun exposure," says Golick. "This is complicated because the
thinning ozone layer allows more UV rays to reach the earth and damage our

"Approximately 20 minutes per day of sun exposure on arms and face is
enough for the manufacture of vitamin D. Sunlight and vitamin D has been

"There are a few dietary secrets for sunburn protection," says Golick.
"Consume more good fats and calcium. Some of the best sources of fats are
from salmon, sardines, or flaxseed oil (6-12 capsules or 1-2 Tbsp.). Take
2-4 citrate or chelated calcium tablets, preferably with magnesium added. Try
also mixing flaxseed oil into yogurt, before or during your stint in the sun.
"There are natural ways to increase the production of melanin, a natural
sunburn skin protectant. Take 2 capsules of L-Tyrosine two times a day and
5 to 6 mg. of chelated copper. Tyrosine also helps with mood, alertness and
stress resistance. Copper, however, can worsen depression in some individuals
who are prone to copper excess. Most people can use it safely during the
suntan season without incident.
"Antioxidants, like vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene have been
demonstrated to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. A diet high in
fruits, veggies and certain herbs is also important.
"Remember to appropriately apply sunscreen protection when out and about
for any length of time. The more natural sunscreens and sun blocks are found
in health food stores. They usually minimize the use of potentially harmful
chemicals that can be found in mass-market products.
"With fish, flax, calcium, L-Tyrosine, copper and antioxidant protection,
you can enjoy fun in the sun without having to pay a hefty price later."
